Ki Smith Gallery presents The Total Actor, a solo exhibition by Kiyomi Quinn Taylor bringing together painting, drawing, textile, collage, moving image, performance, and installation. Taking its title from the idea of the “total actor,” a term with roots in Method acting, the exhibition considers Taylor’s practice through one all-encompassing premise: that the total actor is determined by their ability to perform the “total act.”
What constitutes the total act within the exhibition remains intentionally undefined and mutable. At times it can be Taylor’s uncanny ability to mirror the showmanship of a stage magician through her work, suspending the audience’s disbelief long enough for them to enter and embrace the illusion as reality. In Taylor’s practice, however, the goal is not to make a synthetic reality appear real, but to shed light on the invisible realities beneath the surface…
