About the event

Over the last 3 years the Selendis Sebastian Alexander Johnson Big Band has been developing a simultaneously unique and deeply referential approach to playing along the spectrum that crosses the improvised, the newly composed, and the classically composed. Weaving between new original Symphonies, foundational proto-big band compositions, a suite commissioned by the Black Panther Party, and juxtapositions of improvisational and pre-planned arrangements by band members of other band members' music, the group connects it all with a large ensemble improvisational language that has gradually developed and changed as new people constantly enter and mainstays share new possibilities. Inspired by the art on the walls around them, the band will be exploring new forms, inspired directly by the forms present in the art of the two exhibits on display at Ki Smith Gallery, Taiji Terasaki's Arrested Thresholds and Xavier Haughton's Black Body Radiation.
