Opening Reception for Material Intelligence by Taiji Terasaki

Ki Smith Gallery is pleased to present Arrested Thresholds, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Taiji Terasaki.

Occupying a space between geology and physiology, Terasaki’s works examine the forces through which matter organizes, transforms, and occasionally breaks down. Mineral formations resemble cellular structures. Crystalline growth echoes vascular networks. Volcanic terrains become indistinguishable from microscopic landscapes within the body.

Created through interactions between pigments, minerals, salts, and time-based chemical processes, the paintings emerge through a negotiation between intention and self-organization. Rather than depicting nature, the works allow natural processes to participate directly in their formation.

The exhibition title refers to moments suspended between states: growth and decay, regeneration and pathology, order and dissolution. These thresholds exist throughout the natural world. Lava cools into stone. Crystals nucleate and expand. Tissue repairs itself after injury. Ecosystems recover after disturbance. Yet these same processes can stall, mutate, or move toward collapse.
