About the event

Act1: Conversations with Space and Architecture (CSA) – Kalun Leung

Kalun will present the live premiere of his solo augmented trombone project, Conversations with Space and Architecture. Drawing on Kalun's practice as a movement and sound improvisor and interest in sonifying the built environment, Kalun and collaborator Travis West invented the mubone, a sensor-based augmentation for the trombone that allows for the mapping of sound vis- a-vis the instrument's orientation. The mubone was conceived in 2018 and is currently in its 5th iteration having been presented at IRCAM (Paris) and CIRMMT (Montreal) and published in the proceedings of New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), and the International Conference of Movement and Computing (MOCO). The project acknowledges the support of the Canada Arts Council and Harvestworks.

Act2: Feeding Bubbles – Trevor Van de Velde

Trevor Van de Velde is an experimental composer, sound artist, instrument builder, and creative programmer based in NYC. His practice is oriented toward exploring the relationship between technology, play, and hybridity through electroacoustic composition, custom-built electronics, and mixed-media.

Act3: Selendis Sebastian Alexander Johnson & Shinya Lin:

Both Selendis and Shinya come from backgrounds in free jazz and improvisation, making this duet a long-awaited reunion since their encounter at the New School. Selendis, who has focused much of her practice on integrating improvisation across various works, takes to the vibraphone. Meanwhile, Shinya introduces a DIY electronic instrument incorporating Max Msp with movement control using a gyroscope, sonically drawing inspiration from the genres of Plunderphonia and Ubiquitous music.
